What is VNG (Balance Testing)?

If you are struggling with equilibrium and balance, videonystagmography (VNG) is an important diagnostic procedure that accurately determines the cause of your symptoms. It is a simple, painless procedure.

A camera is used to trace quick eye movements in response to specific positional changes and visual cues. Obtaining this information is important as there are neural pathways that connect the inner ear’s balance mechanism to eye muscles. A disorder of the balance mechanism can cause quick eye movements that can only be detected using advanced optics.

To ensure the most accurate VNG (Balance Testing) results, it is vital for the patient to observe the following:

  • Avoid alcohol consumption 48 hours prior to the test.
  • Do not smoke three hours before the test.
  • No eye makeup should be worn during the test.
  • Avoid certain medications 48 hours prior to the test, including diuretics, sleeping pills, antihistamines, barbiturates, muscle relaxants, sedatives, anti-anxiety medications, tranquilizers, and pain medication.

Note: Consult your physician ahead of time and please don’t discontinue prescription medication(s) without their consent.
